Mamama, 2016

 

Created for the group exhibition "Reproduction" at Sword in the Shell 2016, this work is formed around an inquiry into natural biological versus culturally coded aspects of reproduction. 

Through nature's process of reproduction, many creatures are virtually the same and indistinguishable at a certain stage of embryonic development. 

I'm curious about how and why humans developed from this animalistic state to become civilized, cultured and institutional. There's split from the organic physical processes of life in humans, to a culturally conditioned self-consciousness, with choices over reproduction and where cultural codes for sexiness can induce instinctive impulses to mate with or without reproduction. 

Similarly, cells do not recognise their individuality as they split in the womb to form a creature, yet we became creatures who develop language to describe their universe as if we are not ourselves of this universe. However, where do these sounds come from originally, before they were words? I am curious if the language that comes out of reproducing these basic vocal sounds, out of our organic bodies, is creating the forms that they describe.  

Through the performance and sculptures I wanted to connect with the biological cellular aspect of organic reproduction and reduce myself to the unknowing state of cells in formation, eventually subjecting myself to objects of the civilized human, the chair and the dictionary and further objects of the sexualized female human, the stockings. 

However, still curious about the formation of both matter and culture I resort to the word in both its cultured form, the dictionary I pull from my chest, and the sound MA. Does the vibration of sound create and form matter and events? Why are the words for maternal, matter, material, mass, etc all starting with the sound "MA"? Is the sound MA creating matter? Or is it merely a code for meaning, like stockings?
